'_............._'

The history of a word, slang used amongst a generation or a culture, and dialects are evidence that language is a vague material.
The definitions of a vocabulary can be modified easily, depending on how frequently the users use it in a particular circumstance.
Words can change for an individual, too.
To those who curse a lot, curse words unconsciously are a relief mechanism.
To those with a negative perspective on curse words, it is an unpleasant din.
Imagine an apple.
Without any description of the object, would it be possible to guide others to imagine the same image in your head?
This project is not just a creative endeavor, but a personal journey that I have been on for some time.
It's a question that has been in my mind, causing a certain level of confusion:
How do we truly communicate? When our words fail to convey the exact information we intend, how do we progress? And if communication is often a mirage, what should be the artist’s reward?
This piece is a poem—a collage of synonyms from different movies.
As the piece continues, the 'synonyms' move further from the original definition.
I collected the synonyms from Google and searched for them in ‘playphrase.me', a digital archive that suggests short movie clips that contain the requested phrase.
I have recorded the clips via ‘audio hijack,’ which records the device's output data.
I have added synth pads to achieve the texture that emulates the confusion I have experienced for a year.
I gathered the audio files from movie clips because instead of reading what is written on the paper, the more emotion that the voice conveys, the more a word can transcend its designed limitations.
A zine will be provided to visualize the atmosphere the sound piece creates.
The majority of the references come from post-punk zines.
The sentiment that the culture conveys concurs with the confusion: distortion, simplification, exaggeration, and aggression.

Other works of HJ Kim

As a Chicago-based sound artist, my work is deeply influenced by my multicultural upbringing and my status as a Third Culture Kid.
I delve into themes of relationships, hierarchy, cardinal rules, and the emotions that often remain unresolved.
Drawing inspiration from dub techno and Carl Jung’s theories on shadow, I blend intuitive rhythms with a melancholic progression of chords and melodies.
The ultimate aim of this unique combination is to immerse the audience in a chaotic state, where they experience both aggression and melancholia, leading to a catharsis that unites their guilty conscience and arrogance.
